It’s so darn cold outside! SO cold. It’s hard to exercise, workout, or go to the gym when it’s so cold outside your eyeballs are freezing and the roads are covered in snow.  Stay motivated and don’t let the cold weather drag you down. There’s good news. Working out when it’s cold burns more calories.

And the new year is here. Like most people, one of your resolutions is to get fit, workout more, or lose weight. How can you keep to your promise or goal to exercise even when it’s cold?  There are a number of ways you can do this right in your home with little or no equipment. All you need is a determined attitude and some energy.

So let’s go!

Five Ideas For Working Out at Home When It’s Cold Outside.

1. Download the Bing  Fitness App which offers Step-by-step instructions and videos for 1,000+ exercises and workouts designed for home use, with or without equipment, for all fitness levels. Includes yoga and pilates too- two of my favorites!  Use it on your tablet at home or while traveling.

2. Exercise DVDs/games are a great resource but the same routine can get dull. Keeps things interesting by renting a few videos or fitness games instead of buying. I rented Just Dance 2014 at Redbox before I ended up buying it. Grab a video while grocery shopping or pumping gas.

3.  If you have a two story home, use your steps and go up and down for 15 minutes or more. Download a step counter app and try to reach your goal. I use my Samsung S Health app that came pre-loaded on my Samsung Galaxy S4. I keep the widget on my home screen so that I always know how many steps I’ve taken. The trick is to keep the phone on your body at all times. I stuff it in my pocket.

4. Dance in place for 30 minutes. Dancing is so good for the soul and for burning calories! Put your favorite Pandora station on and get moving. I have a Beyonce station just for my own dance party.

5. Use household items as weights and do some weightlifting. Research some toning exercises that require weights and replace them with items like milk jugs or laundry detergent containers.  This really works, and you’ll know when you are sore the next day. If you are not, up the weight and do more. Feel the burn then do five more. Rest then do two more sets.
