When does Tax Free Weekend Start: The sale starts at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1 and ends at midnight on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014.

What items count as Tax Free in Florida? The Department of Revenue made a few changes to tax free weekend this year. The best of those changes is that it increased the cost of clothing from $75 per item to $100. In addition to most clothing (including baby clothing), school supplies selling for $15 or less per item and the first $750 of the cost of computers and computer-related accessories for school or personal use are non-taxable.

Money Saving Tips for Back to School Shoppers During Tax Free Weekend

1) Plan your shopping trip in advance. Review the ads in newspapers and keep your ads so that you can use price match guarantees that many stores like Walmart, Office Max, Staples,  and Target offer. NO need to shop multiple stores anymore. Most stores won’t honor online prices so have your hard copy of the ad with you. Circle what you plan to buy/use.

2) Combine all your lists or make one. master list. So much easier when you know you need 6 packs of college ruled paper instead of going back and forth on each list. If they are old enough, have your kids create the master list for you (good handwriting and spelling practice!).

3) Use coupons. Most stores will accept competitor coupons but know coupon policies before you shop. Don’t wait for the Sunday paper to get your coupons.  Use free on-line sources such as Smart Source  or  Red Plum.  Some stores now offer their own coupons on-line. They are easily download and printed in just a few seconds.

 4) Stack the deal; use a competitor coupon and manufacturer’s coupon on another’s store’s deal.  This is called “stacking” or doing a “match-up.”  For example, Publix had buy one get one on an item that Target had a coupon for, plus I had a manufacturer’s coupon.  There are several websites that will do all of this work for you.

5) Avoid the lines, order on-line with free shipping or do a ship to store.   Several stores are offering free shipping deals which saves time and gas.  You can also shop on-line then pick up the items at your convenience.  Your school supplies will be waiting for you when you’re ready.  In and out and you are done –  perfecto!

6) Don’t forget your teachers! Teachers do so much for our children and go above and beyond for our children. On average, teachers spend $1,000 of their own money just to make sure their students have the resources they need to learn. Some will have a wishlist of school supply items that are in high demand throughout the year. Consider adding a few extra items to your supply list or a nice gift for your child’s teacher.
