The Art of Sending Thank You Cards or NotesOn my list for 2015 resolutions  is to send more thank you cards or notes. I would add in a “timely manner” or “more often” but the truth is, I think the last time I sent a thank you card was after one of my baby showers, a decade or so ago… Shameful, I know.

It’s not that I don’t know how to write a thank you card. It’s just that I never get around to it. In fact, I went to find cards for my daughter to use only to realize, I have four cards left. At one time, I had many beautiful thank you cards notes. I even have a book on how to write them thanks to my mother-in-law who gifted me the book years ago. Perhaps as a subtle, or not so subtle hint, not sure. Hopefully I did send a thank you card for that gift, at least.

In order to put my goal into action, I need to have all the tools in place. I’m getting ready to put my resolution into action now by ordering thank you cards while the deals are good. Besides, won’t I be saying “thank you” to friends and family for holiday gifts anyhow? Or do you not do thank you cards for the holidays?

Let’s explore…

How and When to Write Thank You Cards

1.When. Send a thank you card following a job interview, Christmas, receiving a birthday present, and more. Most people will send a thank you card after receiving a gift. But you don’t have to wait to receive a gift to send a thank you card. You should send cards for anyone that has gone the extra mile, showed they cared, or just because.  Your boss, your spouse, your co-workers or a friendship that you are thankful for.

2. Specify what you’re thankful for. Example, thanks so much for the beautiful pink bracelet…

3. Make it timely. It’s never too late to say thank you but you really should aim to send your cards within two weeks of receiving the gift or the kind act. Hallmark recommends sending cards following major events like weddings and graduations within one month.

4. Make it personal. Handwrite the card, don’t type or print a mass thank you letter.  Handwriting seems like a lost art but it really does add a personal touch to your note. Address the person by name. “Dear Chase, It was nice to see you last weekend. I wanted to thank you for…”

5. When to buy  thank you cards. Tiny Prints has their “thank you” cards on sale at an incredible price, right in time for the holidays. Get some for you and gift some to a friends. Follow link to get your thank you cards now at 50% off! Use promo code 1218DEAL to save 50%!
