National Margarita Day is February 22. Seems like a good time to share a recipe for Grapefruit Margarita, one of my favorites. I love a good margarita but the freshness and sour of grapefruit makes this one so delicious. Add some quality tequila and hmmm, you’ll have at least two servings.

Let me tell you first about the tequila I used in this recipe. Last summer I enjoyed a beautiful stay at the Grand Velas Riviera Maya, in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Grand Velas is a gorgeous all inclusive, five diamond resort. In each suite, a bottle of Grand Velas tequila, wine, snacks, and more awaits each guest.

And while in Mexico, you drink Margaritas.  Since the all inclusive resort also included all inclusive drinks, I took the liberty to enjoy all kinds of Margaritas.  One of my favorites was a grapefruit Margarita.

Also, while in Mexico, you also learn how tequila is made. In most cities, you can sample homemade tequila at the start or end of most tours. You’ll also learn how it’s made. Tequila comes from the blue agave, a spiky plant that grows in Mexico. First the agave hearts roast in stone ovens. Then they go through a period of maceration, fermentation, and distillation to get the end product: tequila. There are two main categories: 100% Blue Agave or Tequila Mixto, which contains at least 51% blue agave. These two categories are then further broken down according to age. When buying tequila, you’ll notice the price may vary tremendously between brands.  Here’s an easy tip, check the label and look for 100% agave on the bottle. Grab your bottle and some limes, and you’re good to go!

I found a delicious and simple recipe in Healthy Latin Eating: Our Favorite Family Recipes Remixed. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

¡Salud!
