Do natural deodorants really work to cover odor?

I made the switch to natural deodorant last year after confirming what I already knew. Deodorants containing talc and aluminum were not safe to use. Talc is a known carcinogen which means it is known to cause cancer. Using it in your deodorant, makeup, and in baby powder puts you at risk for cancer. Do some quick research and you’ll see what happened to Johnson & Johnson and users of baby powder.

Aluminum in antiperspirants is also linked to breast cancer. Some studies have also shown that people exposed to high levels of aluminum may develop Alzheimer’s disease. No thanks!

Wanting to take no chances on my health or that of my daughter’s, I decided it was time to make the switch to natural deodorant that were talc free and aluminum free. I put the three most popular natural deodorants to the test. I tried Tom’s, Schmidt’s, and Secret’s Aluminum-Free Deodorant.

Which natural deodorant worked best to cover bad odor? After giving each one a few weeks, even a month or more to work, I came to some simple conclusions.

First, one of the brands did not work at ALL. Even if I applied it several times during the day, it did not cover order or make it through a work-out. In fact, I smelled way too “natural.” I gave it a good 30 days and I think it got worse each week. I finally had to stop. I asked my daughter to try it too and she said agreed.

The remaining two deodorants had pros and cons but generally worked just fine. One of them was my favorite and works great and is now my go-to brand.

Best Natural Deodorants Reviewed

1. Schmidt’s Aluminum-Free Natural Deodorant for Women and Men, Bergamot + Lime with 24 Hour Odor Protection. Available on Amazon for the same price as Target. I liked this deodorant. The only real adjustment is the feel of the deodorant when it goes on. It’s a bit sticky and wet. I had to let it dry before I put on a shirt. This natural deodorant works to cover order and I was happy with it.
2. Secret Aluminum Free Deodorant for Women, Coconut Scent, Invisible Solid, 2.4 Oz (Pack of 3) This by far was my favorite of the three. It dried clear, worked all day, and there was no real difference between Secret Aluminum Free to the “regular” one that I have used many times before. The smell was not too strong and it lasted through even an hour of indoor cycling class with no issues.
3. Tom’s of Maine Natural Strength Deodorant, Deodorant for Women, Natural Deodorant, Fresh Coconut, 2.1 Ounce, 3-Pack. Tom’s is a complete no for us. I gave this one several tries. I also applied several times throughout the day. I could not get it to cover orders and I also felt perspiration. Apologies to anyone that may have come in contact with me during this unfortunate experience.
