This week we are in Savannah, Georgia for a few days. One of my favorite romantic towns in the south. Home of celebrity chef Paula Dean and her restaurant The Lady & Sons. Lady & Sons is just one of the many great restaurants in Savannah. A short stroll down Broughton Street and you will find restaurants that cater to many different palates. You can find traditional Indian cuisine, a Tapas bar, sushi, or gourmet Italian all on the same block.
Savannah is your perfect blend of architecture and delicious food. You may remember that the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was filmed here in case you saw it. In the film you see many of the town’s gardens known as squares. General James Oglethorpe designed Savannah to include 24 squares most of which are now filled with beautiful gardens and/or monuments. The squares make Savannah a charming walking town but you can also get around in a number of different ways. There are many sight seeing tours available by river boat, horse and carriage, trolley, or even a hearse. Yes, a hearse, the type of vehicle usually used to transport caskets? Hearse driven tours are one of the many ghost tours available in Savannah since the town is said to be haunted. Legend has it that if you walk through one of the squares after dark, you may find a ghost hanging off one of the large Spanish moss trees that surround the gardens. (Boo!)
There is much more to say about Savannah and it’s good food, bed and breakfasts, and the architecture but today I’m focusing on the best dessert available. One of my favorite places to go when in Savannah is Leopold’s Ice Cream . When you walk into Leopold’s you will not only admire the smells but also the charm of the decor. Old fashioned counters and ice creme parlor antiques can be found throughout the dining room. Originally opened in 1919, Leopold’s offers homemade ice cream made in house and other tasty treats including a variety of gourmet cupcakes, brownies, and pies. And what’s some pie without hot chocolate, a cappuccino, or latte? Well it’s just a plain pie, that’s what. Today’s cupcake special was Banana Puddin’. We got there right on time as it was the last one left, sitting there all lonely looking me so of course I had to order one. Especially after I was told that it was filled with banana pudding goodness in the center. The cupcake was so moist and the pudding so tasty, it reminded me why we always stop at Leopold’s when we are in Savannah.
If you miss old fashioned ice cream then Leopold’s is a must. Be sure to stop in next time you are in Savannah.
