Movie Beverly Hills Chihuaha

How do you teach your children about celebrating culture and family?  With Hispanic Heritage month now in full-swing as of September 15, now is a good time to incorporate some cultural awareness of the Latino culture with your children.   Finding ways to teach Hispanic heritage does not have to be complicated or time consuming.  It can be as easy as doing a Google search about Hispanic heritage or, watching a movie that incorporates some of the key messages that you have taught your children. This year, with the recent release of  Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva La Fiesta!, teaching your children about one Latin family tradition just got a whole lot easier and of course, fun!

Movie Beverly Hills Chihuaha

The movie arrived and my daughter who has been a big fan of Beverly Hills Chihuahua I and II, could not wait to watch the latest adventure. She popped it in the DVD player in the living room, and my ears perked up when I heard “Papi,” the voice of George Lopez, say he was going to be throwing a Quinceañera for his daughter, Rosa. A Quinceañera is the Latin version of a girl’s sweet sixteen birthday.  With excitement and girly giggles, I sat down with my daughter and watched the movie about the whole story of Rosa, Papi’s tiniest Chihuahua of his litter of five.  We watched as Papi went through the usual emotions and anxiety involved when a Latin dad prepares his daughter for the big event.

A traditional Quinceañera is a big celebration and fiesta where the parents introduce their daughter to friends and family as a young woman.   The celebration includes a big party made up of a court similar to a wedding party.  The court has fourteen damas, like bridesmaids, and fourteen male chambelanes who serve as escorts for the damas. And just like most wedding ceremonies, a church service may take place that is followed by a large reception and party with flowers, food, pictures, etc. At the reception, the entire court will perform a dance for the guests.

I had spoken to my daughter about Quinceañeras before so as soon as she heard it in the movie she got very excited.  Beverly Hills Chihuahua did a great job in celebrating family, culture, and taking pride in what makes you different. By the time the movie was over, my daughter was counting down the years until her own Quinceañera. I chuckled as I thought about what would happen eight years from now.  I never had  a Quinceañera growing up but I remember my mom telling me all about them while I was growing up.  Now that I have my own little girl, I certainly plan on doing something to celebrate her Quinceañera.
