Bladder leaks? Female incontinence? Grab some coffee and let’s chat! Kind of embarrassing to talk about, right? But did you know that 1-in-3 women experience bladder leaks? That’s 33 percent of us! For African-American women, the number goes up to 1-in-2! It’s not always fun to talk about managing bladder leaks or an overactive bladder. But it’s okay. Let’s rip that band-aid off and talk about the best way to manage female bladder leaks and what products you’ll need on hand. Bladder leaks are a normal part of life. Whether it’s caused by aging or motherhood, an active bladder is not so uncommon and it’s not something to be embarrassed by. I experienced bladder leaks after my babies were born. I gained a lot of weight with each of my pregnancies. Almost 60 pounds with my daughter. That’s a lot of weight for anyone, especially someone with a small frame like me.   1. It’s okay to talk about it. Seems like women can talk about everything except this. It’s okay to talk about it. After all, we know that many women experience bladder problems for a variety of reasons.
  2. Cough less. Don’t get caught in the cough, cough, leak, leak cycle. You can reduce stress on your bladder by cutting down on the coughing. Take cough drops, use a humidifier, drink hot tea on a regular basis. Coughing adds stress to your pelvic floor, weakening your muscles and causing more bladder leaks.
  3. Do Kegel exercises. Kegel exercises helped me reduce bladder leakage by training my muscles. These pelvic floor muscle exercises are a form of muscle training and worked for me. Here’s a great how-to article on how to do Kegel exercises.
  4. Have the right products on hand. Although many women experience bladder leaks, only 1-in-9 use incontinence products. Because I didn’t know any better, I used regular menstrual panty liners. Take it from me, that was not the right move.
